South Ossetia Votes For Independence From Georgia
Over 99% of the 55,000 voters in the Georgian province of South Ossetia voted for independence Sunday. The vote is not being recognized by anyone, but it is expected to further strain the relationship between Georgia and Russia. South Ossetia officials say they hope this is the first step towards independence from Georgia and eventual reunion with Russia. Pro-West Georgia blames Russian interference for the vote.
